Signs if a person is having a stroke.
A stroke happens when your brain’s blood supply is being interrupted. This prevents the brain from getting enough oxygen and nutrients. When this happens, brain cells begin to die in a span of minutes. A stroke is a medical emergency and prompt medical attention is needed in order to reduce complications. If you think the person might be having a stroke, one can do this quick test in order to verify if the person is having a stroke.
- Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
- Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?
If you see on or more of these symptoms, call your local emergency number right away. Wait for the emergency assistance while watching and observing the person carefully. Don’t wait to see if symptoms stop. The longer a stroke goes untreated, the greater the risk of complications.
